Beta-alanine It is one of the most well-researched performance enhancers in the world of sports supplements. Studies show that taking it consistently for about four weeks can result in greater fatigue resistanceallowing you to train harder for longer.*
This, in turn, can help support your individual fitness goals, such as more muscleless fat and greater resistance. As with any supplement, knowing when to take beta-alanine can help you get the most out of it.*
Some supplements have an “acute” effect, meaning you get a direct benefit shortly after ingesting them. For example, caffeine produces a sharp increase in focus in as little as 15 minutes for many people.
Beta-alanine is different. “Beta-alanine can take four to six weeks to reach sufficient levels in the body to make a noticeable difference in your workouts,” says Trevor Thieme, CSCS. As such, there is no need (nor any short-term benefit) to take it right before exercising.
Additionally, unlike caffeine, which acts primarily in the central nervous system, beta-alanine acts in muscle cells and combines with histidine to form carnosine. Carnosine helps buffer the acid buildup that causes “burning” sensation during intense exercise. The result: an increase in muscular endurance.*
Taking beta-alanine is a long-term investment. “It doesn’t really matter when you take beta-alanine during the day, as long as you take it,” Thieme says. In the morning with your coffee, at night with your proteinin your pre-workout supplement -Is everything all right.
Just be consistent and you can expect a noticeable improvement in your training performance a few weeks later.*
Beta-alanine itself is not a pre-workout supplement as it does not provide any acute effects and you can take it at any time of the day. However, it is a common ingredient in pre-workout formulations such as Energize Beachbody Performance — because it ensures you get your daily portion.*
You may also experience a common, though harmless, side effect when starting to take supplements: beta-alanine tingling. Often described as a slight prickling sting or tingling under the skin, beta-alanine tingling is a temporary sensation that usually begins in the neck, shoulders, and arms about 15 minutes after taking it.
If you can’t get used to the tingling sensation, you can minimize it by simply dividing the doses throughout the day.
